Raccontarsi bilingue. “Le Vie di New York” di Martino Iasoni
Abstract
In his autobiographical narrative “Le Vie di New York”. Ricordi di Gioventù 1906-1924, Italian American artist Martino Iasoni tells the intense story of his urban youth, caught between street- and family-life, artistic education under the guidance of great masters John Sloan and Robert Henri, and a myriad temporary jobs. He does it, for a good part, in double text (both in Italian and English), and adding the vivid language of his illustrations. The real story of this artistic growth is thus framed from the point of view of a return immigrant to Fascist and post-WWII Italy, who struggles to pierce the monolingual and monocultural uniformity of his rural surroundings in the 1930s and 1950s, and to recapture the richness of his recent past through an intriguing, but also unwittingly solipsistic, interplay among the different codes of his ‘plural’ identity.
