Extension du domaine de la médiation

Daniel Coste, Marisa Cavalli

Abstract

This paper presents some aspects of a study in progress for the Language Policy Unit of the Council of Europe. It is an outline of the attempt to include the general model of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), published in 2001, within a broader and updated notional apparatus. This tentative reframing rests on the notions of otherness, mobility and community and assigns a central position to mediation as a means of action, especially in the field of education. Attention is given to the relationship between mediation and mobility, not only because of their semantic proximity, but also because mobility plays a major part in the dynamics of the general model, making mediation activities all the more important in that sector. A distinction is established between cognitive mediation and relational mediation, as performed by social agents and groups, as well as by institutions.
